Which USB-RS232 adaptor do I need for C-Bus?

Issue:
User is trying to connect PC Computer to Clipsal C-Bus system through RS232 PC Interface PCI device.  The user cannot establish a connection or open the network.

Product Line:
Clipsal C-bus 5500PC Serial Interface

Environment:
C-Bus Toolkit

Cause:
Most PC's today do not have built in RS-232 ports.  The PC must use a USB to RS-232 adaptor device or cable.    It has been our experience that some of these USB to RS232 adaptors work better than others.  The reasons for these differences is typically driver related.

Also, it has been our experience that although a USB to serial adaptor may be known to work on one piece of equipment, it may not work on the C-Bus PCI.   For example, we have seen some adaptors successfully connect to a Powerlink G3 controller and then fail to connect to a C-Bus RS-232 PCI.

Resolution:
It is suggested to try a USB-to-serial adaptor that is known to work with C-Bus these will need to contain the FTDI Chip set.
Cheaper brands on the market do not use this chip and will not work correctly with the Serial Library used by C-Bus Software.

Google Search: USB-RS232 FTDI

This will show results from suppliers such as Element14, RS Components etc, we've had success with these adaptors in the past.

An alternative resolution would be to use a different device to access the C-Bus Network such as any of the following:
USB PC Interface 5500PCU
Pascal Automation Controller 5500PACA
Ethernet Network Interface 5500CN2
Mark II Black and White Touch Screens

How C-bus is actioned via alexa or google home for voice control?

C-Bus doesn't have a native voice control solution. We have partnered with SmartVoice that provides a cloud based voice control solution.

See attached Schneider Electric & C-Bus Voice Control - July 2020.pdf for further information.

Can I remotely scan a customer network with Toolkit and just a CNI (C-Bus Network Interface)?

Yes, you will need to purchase and configure a CNI for the network, once you have set a static IP on the CNI you will need to setup Port Forwarding in the customers Modem/Router.

You will need to create a Port forward Rule, to allow port 10001 from External to Port 10001 Internal at the IP address of the CNI.
For help with Port Forwarding go to a service like http://www.portforward.com

Once this has been configured, you will need to configure the confection in Toolkit to use either a CNI or Wiser connection type, enter the IP address that the ISP has assigned to that customers connection (Not the internal IP of the CNI), the Port should already be set to 10001 - Do not change this.

The External IP can be either Dynamic or Static, if it's Static this will not change, but if Dynamic you will need to use a method to be able to check what the current External IP is before trying to connect.

You can use a service like http://dyn.com/dns/ sign up for an account and enter those details into the customer Modem, to check the IP you will need to go to a Command Prompt (CMD) and Ping the URL address, it will respond with the current External IP address that the ISP has assigned to the customers Internet Connection
